About the COVID-19 Pandemic

Coronavirus is a deadly respiratory disease that has progressed across the world. The nature of the virus is highly contagious and it spreads very easily from person to person.  This new coronavirus can induce a wildfire in a person's body, capable of affecting many organs, especially the lungs.  So detrimental are the effects of this violent plague that it can infect around 60% of the globe if not curtailed immediately. In fact, according to research, it is currently 23 times more fatal than the regular seasonal flu.  Unfortunately, unlike the regular influenza, there is currently no over-the-counter treatment available for the disease. Everyone is highly susceptible to it.

How does the Coronavirus infect and affect the body?

Respiratory issues:

Coronavirus has symptoms similar to influenza, and it primarily targets the lungs which are highly fragile organs. This respiratory disease spreads as simply as when an infected person coughs or sneezes, resulting in the virus being transmitted to any person in close contact.  The symptoms start appearing anywhere between 2 to 14 days, depending on the severity of the infection such as fever, cough, shortness of breath or even pneumonia. In extreme cases, it may even cause respiratory failure. It is important to keep in mind that all many factors like age and overall health can contribute to the severity of these symptoms. We have seen thus far, elderly people with chronic medical conditions are among the highest risk of being severely affected by this illness.

The path to infection:

Phase 1:

“Novel Coronavirus” first attacks the two classes of lung cells—ones that generate mucus and cells that have hair-like batons known as cilia. Mucus secretions help shield lung tissue pathogens—ensuring breathing doesn’t dry out. While the cilia cells help rid debris such as pollen or viruses. Once these cells are infected, patients could develop pneumonia, followed by symptoms like shortness of breath.

Phase 2:

This is the stage when our body attempts to fight off the viral infection by filling up the lungs with immune cells. The goal here is to attempt to heal the damaged lung tissue. When working right, the cells will target infected areas. When the infection is too much, healthy lung tissue might be a target too. If this is the case, the patient runs the risk of pneumonia getting worse along with the symptoms.

Phase 3:

Once pneumonia becomes too much for the body to fight off, it can cause severe respiratory failure and, in some cases, be fatal for patients.

Other areas of the body:

Aside from the lungs, some cases of COVID-19 have resulted in gastrointestinal symptoms that include nausea or diarrhea. It can also affect the heart and even blood flow—causing irregular heart rhythms, lack of blood getting to the tissues, and/or low blood pressure. Even the liver and kidneys are susceptible to experiencing damage.

At this stage, it is crucial to take the necessary precautions to mitigate the risk of catching the disease. Like the common cold and the flu, the health organizations have proposed similar measures to prevent ourselves from the disease.

What are some ways to prevent the virus?

Since there is no cure, self-care is the rational solution.  It is highly recommended to keep yourself isolated in order to alleviate the risks of transmission.  The virus finds its way into the body through the eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Wash your hands properly with soap and alcoholic solutions to disinfect any viruses and germs and maintain maximum hygiene.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and sneezing.

  • Avoid close contact, particularly shaking hands with people.

  • Avoiding public places and unnecessarily touching surfaces such as door knobs, elevator buttons, etc.

  • Boost your immune system to be able to fight any potential infection.

What can vitamins and herbal supplements do?

While vitamins and dietary supplements do not protect against the transmission of COVID-19, some can support your overall immune health. Vitamin D, C, and Zinc are vitamins that are essential for immune function and may help lower your risk of respiratory infections.

Many types of Medicinal mushrooms have been used since ancient times to prevent and treat infection and disease. The following links are sourced from accurate medical research. Among them, PSP from Coriolus versicolor, also known as “Turkey Tail” mushroom has the most evidence-based research and trials for its immune boosting properties. It contains a wide variety of phenol and flavonoid antioxidants which help promote your immune system health by reducing inflammation and stimulating the release of protective compounds.  PSP increases monocytes, which are types of white blood cells that fight infection and boost immunity.  Multiple research studies have demonstrated that PSP suppresses the growth of cancer and enhances efficacy of both chemotherapy and radiation in people with certain cancers.

Another herbal supplement to mention is Isatis Root Granules aka Ban-Lan-Gen.   Ban-Lan-Gen (BLG) has a thousand-year history of use for the prevention and treatment of respiratory tract infections (particularly respiratory viral diseases). BLG was highlighted as a classic antiviral and anti-influenza agent in the People’s Republic of China Pharmacopoeia in 1979 and 2010, respectively. Additionally, BLG was one of the eight major medicines recommended by the Chinese government for the prevention and control of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
